Mar 21, 2019 Emby Media Server has many client apps including: Kodi, Windows Media Center/XBOX 360 (MCE Extender), Android TV, Roku/Now TV boxes, Amazon Fire TV, some Samsung Smart TVs. This means when you copy local movies to Emby, you can stream your movies with Roku, Koid, WMC, etc. Emby Media Server has many client apps including: Kodi, Windows Media Center/XBOX 360 (MCE Extender), Android TV, Roku/Now TV boxes, Amazon Fire TV, some Samsung Smart TVs. I switched from Plex to Emby around 3 months ago in the hope that it would be a breath of fresh air with a more modern technology stack and rapid development after waiting for Plex to fix some long standing bugs but find my self switching back today.
I look around reviews and this subreddit and see that Emby has so much praise but I just cannot see why, in all honesty.
- It regularly fails to play media with an endlessly spinning circle
- It regularly fails to release tuners, meaning all DVR recordings and live TV fail until the server is restarted
- The EPG data/setup leaves a lot to be desired (granted they're moving to Gracenote)
- The Emby accounts system is overly complex and convoluted
- The (is it Node?) based interface looks fantastic, but performance is absolutely abysmal and isn't particularly functional as a full screen television interface with a remote
I've tried running the Emby server on Ubuntu and Windows, and the client on a Smart TV, casting from an iPad, and on Windows but they all have similar issues in that they feel sluggish and unpleasant to use.
I look around the Emby community and find pretty nasty bugs that were reported over 12 months ago without being fixed and Emby staff that don't seem to really care judging by their forum responses.
The final straw is that 1. I'm paying for the privilege of the DVR sucking (more my family's problem than my own) and 2. the recent debacle moving to closed source
What am I missing here? I love screwing with new products/tech and accept there are going to be problems but honestly they seem to be trying to move towards being a commercial venture without the polished product or customer service to do so.
I just think the people behind Emby need to take a step back and seriously focus on some performance and reliability enhancements before anything else at this point.
